A similar configuration was used in a TDI-powered drilling machine in Alaska. 1100 RPM fixed idle in a highly modified TDI with stiffer engine mounts. This reduces idle vibration. 1200 RPM elevated idle was also applied at lower coolant temp to potentially warm up the engine faster. This feature has been in use for a year with no issues.

It'll likely be cheaper and easier to just pick up a tdi. You mention that your current car is a known entity, but once you start hacking on a turbo kit etc that ceases to be the case. The money you save will either go towards fixing any minor issues on a tdi, or just buying a better one in the first place.
Being a petrol engine, TSI is also easy to maintain and repair. But compared to a diesel lifespan, TSI doesn’t seem that durable. Generally, a diesel engine is rated at 300,000 miles. But TDI engines have lasted for 500,000 miles or 30 years. TDI engines also need less maintenance and fewer repairs compared to TSI. But they sure are costly.
The 1.9 is slightly more economical, the 2.0 is quicker revving, smoother, faster, quieter. The 1.9 only has a 5 speed box though. The 2.0 doesn't pull quite as well from low revs (the 1.9 is like a tank) but is less peaky. Given the choice I took the 2.0TDI and I don't regret it at all. Regards.

Agreed on saving for a faster car. I have an 06 1.6 Polo. Besides cosmetics - and removing the air filter restricter, that engine will stay as it is. Ask Echo03 on this forum just how much software and a freflow makes a difference. With regards to the decat - I may remove mine, too. It's like R150 or so at some places.
